Road Trip: Kedah-Penang-Perak-Cameron

This entry is a long due entry that the road trip was done months ago, on 30th September. It’s a 3 days 2 nights road trip, 1300km long drive from Shah Alam all the way to Penang with a stop at Rawang for evening tea at Cow Café Kopitiam and Yik Mun Pau in Tg Malim.. The journey never stops in Penang when we decided to make a visit to Kedah for the Radix Fried Chicken (RFC).  Then we head down to Perak and up to Cameron for Scones! Oh by the way, in case you don’t already know, this road trip has purpose, and the only purpose is; FOOD 🙂

Well now let’s get started, shall we?

The road trip this time started around evening because we had quite a limited time, having some stuff to deal with during the day earlier.  I made a request to have our first visit in Rawang for evening tea at the Cow Café, one of my favorite kopitiam. I had this posted earlier about this Cafe.

More photos after jump!

Tea/Coffee, Roti Bakar and half boiled egg, a must-have menu whenever I stop here.

The café is located in Bukit Sentosa, just next Bukit Beruntung. After the short break, we continue our journey to Penang. Along the way from Rawang, there is a junction where a famous pau restaurant is located. I believe it’s quite well-known that we can’t afford to not have a visit. It’s the Yik Mun Pau, in Tg Malim. Arrival time? Just nice for our dinner! So we had Pau here and ordered meal set for the night.

Done with Yik Mun, the road trip continue, now straight to Penang and we have no plan to stop anywhere now. Furthermore, it’s dark, and most shops and restaurants are already closed at this time.

To be honest, I’ve never studied the road map for my road trip all these while. All done by a friend of mine, who is always with us for a road trip and also the driver in all of our trips since he knows the road, and it was his car that we were in. I have to admit that I missed the part of understanding the road map, which means when the next time I want to go for a road trip, I will have to find my own map, or get him to guide me, or might as well go with him? Haha. Well I hope we’ll be a trip partner for a very long time, in many many years to come…

Anyway now that we have arrived in Penang, but guess what, all of us decided not to check-in to any hotels just yet. By doing so, we saved room cost for the first night. Uh-huh. So what do we do?

Have I told you that we arrived around 4am?

It was really late, and all of us were not so sleepy, yet.  So to kill time, we decided to have a coffee in Kedah! Well that’s too far for a coffee from Penang, no? urm actually it’s quite nearby. We had our late coffee at one of Kedah’ nasi kandar restaurant or rather called Mamak, just right next to HSBC. Then we waited till morning come, to cross the Penang straight. Of course we get sleepy before that, so we just park our car to the nearest petrol station and take a nap. not really a nap though, we sleep for two hours, btw. Then only we continue our journey to the Penang Island.

Wonder what was done early in the morning in Penang? Well take a look at the picture above, it’s the Roti Canai Sambal Daging that we were after for breakfast! Not to forget with half boiled egg too. The roti canai have quite a good taste, and we love it. We often eatroti canai with Curry or Dal, but this time, it’s just different, and served with a piece of meat. We were told that this is one of a famous breakfast available in Penang, ‘the island of food’.

This is the stall we visited in the morning, sorry I don’t really remember road name, but I do know it’s located somewhere around the Chow Rasta, just down the street, next to a Surau.

Right after the breakfast, we head over to Chow Rasta itself to buy some pickled fruits or rather called Jeruk in our Malay language. Then suddenly my friend felt that the stall we went for the roti canai sambal, was not the original one, although they have the same food served. So again, we take our second breakfast at the original stall, and this is how it looks like…

And no, I decided not to put up the picture of the Roti Canai Sambal Daging served here, because to be honest it’s pretty much the same as the above. And to my surprise, the taste  are quite the same too.

Are we enough for 2 breakfasts already? haha yeah so to release some ‘tension’ in our head, we spend our time in the Penang Garden. Small but a nice garden/park located at a hill side, this garden has a nice view and peaceful.

We had a good time at the park, have our mind a little rest after a long journey and only 2 hours sleep earlier. We have decided to check-in to a hotel that is cheap, and comfy. After a survey, we decided to stay in Ferringi. Along rest we had here right after check-in, and we skipped our lunch due to our exhaustion.

After wake up, we took a journey to Balik Pulau in hunt for a famous food, but I dont remember what was the food name since we missed it when we found the restaurant that serve the food was closed on that day. Basically our journey to Balik Pulau didn’t give us food, but we had a good time looking around. I’ve never been there before, so it was nice to visit a new place and have it marked in my own map.

Then as planned, we head up to Penang Hill which also known as Bukit Bendera. The moment we arrived at the top, it was already after sunset. I missed the sunset photos.

The night has come, it’s time for dinner!

Our dinner hunt head us to Pak Su restaurant located in Kampung Bagan Nyior, Kuala Juru. Yes this one located in kampung area, we thought we were lost in hunt for the restaurant.

So, why are we here?

Mee Ketam Pak Su? Sorry for the pic quality, I didnt managed to get it well this time. And by the way, we arrived in Kampung Bagan Nyior only to find that Pak Su restaurant is close. Second target location that was close. So the Mee Ketam above we had at a restaurant not far away from Pak Su’. I guess they are competitor, or could be family too.

2 locations was closed in our journey, *sigh.

Anyway, the hunt never stops there. After our dinner with Mee Ketam and Nasi Ikan Bawal, we head over Kapitan Nasi Kandar restaurant for its famous Claypot Briyani. Now this is quite different when the Briyani is actually served in a clay-pot instead of normal plate of rice.

2 breakfasts, 2 dinner, no lunch though.

That was all we had in the first day. In the next day, again we head over to Kapitan area where we hunt for a famous breakfast stall for roti bakar. This breakfast, awesome that we had about 2 to 3 sets for each of us. They served good coffee too and how they prepare the roti bakar is quite old school which is interesting enough.

Coffee flavoured roti bakar, my favourite of all compare to others. Maybe some of you have already been here, and the way I see it, the stall is always full of customers from morning to evening and finishes their food by 5pm.

I guess this post is already too long by now, it’s not nice to put it all in one entry therefore I will continue this in part 2, coming in the next few days.. hehe. Next part will have more photos.
